'Not so' Good Friday

What is Good Friday?

Good Friday is celebrated in the Christian faith as the day when Jesus Christ was crucified and centers around the idea that his death took place at Calvary. At the holiday's core, it is an observance day for Christians to reflect on what Christ has done for his followers through prayers, fasting, and spiritual observance.

Why call it Good Friday?

If the holiday celebrates something so horrible, why do they call it 'Good' Friday? It gets its name because it is said that even though it was a terrible day, it was necessary for the world to receive the joy of Easter (Christianity.com). Others believe it is a product of time changing it's original name, "God's Friday".

Other names for the holiday include: Holy Friday, Great Friday, and Black Friday.

Observance of Good Friday

Most Christians observe Good Friday by praying and fasting; some partake in a stricter fast while others do partial fasts, opting not to eat meat. There are sometimes special church observances held for the day, which often feature accounts on Christ's passion and crucifixion, and take place on Friday evening.

Good Friday lands on the Friday before Easter. Since Easter is ever changing, falling on the first Sunday after the Worm Moon, this year Good Friday will be March 29th 2024.

Ingredients:

  • 4 TBS unsalted butter, plus more for the pan

  • One 10-ounce bag mini marshmallows

  • 1 TSP pure vanilla extract

  • Kosher salt

  • 6 cups Rice Krispies

  • 1 cup chopped Peeps (about 8)

  • 1 cup candy-coated mini chocolate eggs or other candy-coated chocolates

  • 1/3 cup chopped chocolate bunnies (about one 1.5 ounce hollow bunny)

Steps:

  1. Line an 8-by-8-inch baking dish with a sheet of foil large enough to leave a 2-inch overhang on all sides. Grease foil with 1 TBS of butter.

  2. Melt remaining 4 TBS butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add peeps, stirring occasionally until completely melted, this takes about 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla and a pinch of salt.

  3. Working quickly, add cereal and candy to the pot and stir with a rubber spatula until evenly coated. Transfer to the prepared baking dish and press into an even, compact layer. (Wet your hands to keep mixture from sticking.) Let sit at room temperature until firm, about 30 minutes. Cut into 16 squares.

  4. Store the treats at room temperature, shelf life is about 3 days in air tight container.
